Blue Mountains

9/20 Today Anky, Sjef, Arjen and Frank visited the Blue Mountains. Jürgen and Gaby Koschel joined the party. Gaby, Jürgen’s wife, has just arrived in Sydney, so this was a perfect occasion to go sightseeing. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful, untouched nature that covers thousands of square kilometers. The blue colour of the mountains comes from the mist produced by the eucalyptus trees, which are growing there. You don’t find villages and towns over there. This is because the area was too rugged for the pioneers to cross. They also visited the town Katoomba with her splendid views. An important natural monument here is ‘The Three Sisters’. These are three rock formations that point up in the air like peaks. Why it is called ‘The Three Sisters’ is something they unfortunately missed learning on this trip. Next they took a cable car down the face of a very steep rock wall. A several hundred meters later they arrived at the mineshaft, where workers once mined for coal. It was a nice experience, although fear of heights should not be in your vocabulary. Ellen stayed at the stables to play a little with Silvano: Coby visited a few farms, in search for new ideas in the care of agricultural and life stock. This is a gift from Coby to her husband Arie, who had to stay home to take care of his farm.

9/19 At this moment it is extremely hot in Sydney. Sjef: “Today we trained the horses in the heat of the day on purpose. Except a few show jumpers, we were the only ones training. Apart from the racket the Australians made when they won the team gold for the Eventing, it was nice and quiet. Anky and Arjen had four arenas at their grand disposal. Now we were training at another time, we saw several riders jogging here. So we are not the only sportive people with our daily visit to the fitness center. Contrary to today we will train really early tomorrow morning. Then we make a trip with the whole team to the Blue Mountains.” After the enthusiastic stories from Anky and Sjef who visited the mountains one and a half years ago, everyone was very interested in them. The Mountains get their name because of their blue colour. This colour comes from the blue mist produced by the eucalyptus trees, which cover the mountains. The tourist city Katoomba with its beautiful views will also be honored with a visit.
