Tragedy Strikes on Eventing Cross-Country

9/21 Anky van Grunsven: Today there were a lot of accidents during the individual cross-country. Coming off a fence Mary Jane Tumbridge’s horse, a combination from Bermuda, landed in such a way he broke his pastern. Unfortunately they had to decide to put him down. The Brazilian Roberto Macedo flipped together with his horse over a fence. At this moment Roberto is in hospital with a broken pelvic bone. The Danish Niels Haagensen also flipped with his Hannoverian grey, Discovery. Unfortunately causing him to break his shoulder. For the rest there were numerous other accidents.  Because the individual riders were estimated to have more experience, the course was built more technical. Unfortunately it took victims. Sjef: “ We watched the competition on the local TV screens here at the barn, but with one graphic accident after another we decided to stop watching. Our dressage team is not fans of three-day Eventing in this way. We do not condone harm to horses. As a horse lover you are not happy with these accidents, even more the equestrian sport gets a negative image from these happenings. The Australian broadcasters, who take care of the TV viewings, are very restrictive in broadcasting accidents. Photographers were politely told not to publish photos of the accidents. But this does not solve the problem. Next to the horse accidents in the Olympic qualifiers worldwide, there were seven human deaths. I think the responsible gentlemen should look into this problem once again. Otherwise I foresee that the tree-day Eventing will be dropped as an Olympic Sport.”
