Horses Fly to Sydney

August 22. This morning at half past four Gestion Bonfire, Gestion Idool, Olympic Ferro, Gestion Silvano N and Goliath T started their big trip to Sydney. After all the horses were declared healthy at Anky van Grunsven’s Stables and the Official Vet signed all the required papers, the trip started. The horses left for Schiphol Airport in a special disinfected and sealed lorry. When they arrived there the horses could go in the containers guarded by their grooms. Afterwards the containers were transported to the airplane. A few horses have never been flown before. But till now everything went fine. Ferro first was a little bit scared to go in the container, but next to his experienced travel partner Gestion Idool, he felt soon comfortable again. The riders are also flying with the same airplane. The Dutch Media will pay attention on television tonight.

August 23 This morning all the Olympic horses arrived safe and sound in Sydney. After a stop in Singapore to refuel the plane, it was still 7 hours flying until they could land in Sydney. The horses sustained the journey well. The control of the official paper work went fast, so the horses could leave for their Australian stables quickly. The riders also are on their way to their houses where they stay during the Olympics.

August 24 The horses are happy in their stables and Anky, Arjen, Ellen, Coby, the grooms and trainers are all settled in their houses now. Everyone is adapting to the Australian way of life and the time difference, which is eight hours later. Anky:” We were very pleased with the way the journey went. We had a very short flight. It only took 21 hours. This was because of the tail wind. The horses were in their stables within one and a half hours after arrival. This meant that they could rest early and have a good nights sleep. They are in huge stables which measure 4 x 4 meters. Today I walked Bonfire already under the saddle and Sjef did the same with Idool. Today all horses were checked by the vet and were all declared healthy. I’m happy that no horse got a fever from the flight. By the way it is much colder in Sydney and it is very windy. At night it is only between 5 and 10° degrees Celsius. So we put warmer blankets on the horses. During the daytime it is around 20°. This is a nice temperature to train in.”
