Warm Up on Competition Days

9/27 The dressage riders have all the possibilities to work in a relaxed way towards their tests. An hour before start time you are allowed to warm up in ring 4, 22 minutes out from your ride time you proceed to ring 3, 11minutes before, you go to ring 2, after which you can enter the main ring. At the bell you have a minute to start your test. The media obligations are another story. As soon as a rider is finished, the media would storm the rider for an interview. They want you off the horse for their exclusive, whether the horse is quiet or not. In Anky’s and Ellen’s case they prefer to take the horses back under the saddle to the stable. When these horses are walked in hand they get excited and bounce around. The riders want to protect their horses, because they still have two days to compete. The media does not understand this, but in this case the horse comes first, media second. If the horse arrived safely at the stables, then there is still plenty of time for media obligations.

Competition Days

9/27 How do Olympic combinations prepare for a test? There are several methods to warm up for a show. Some riders only warm up their horses once for the test. Others ride their horses twice. Anky rides Bonfire one time. About 45 minutes before start-time she mounts him and makes him ready for the test. For those riders that ride their horses twice, there are also two methods. There are riders who during their first ride only work for a short amount of time and warm up longer for their afternoon test-ride. But others will ride their morning ride longer and have a short warm up for their afternoon test. Besides the horses, the riders also have to prepare (mentally). Almost all the Dutch dressage riders retire to themselves an hour before they get on their horse. Normally Anky sleeps for an hour in her horse-van. Here in Sydney there is no horse-van, so before her start in the team competition, she snuck away to the tack room to read. Arjen and Ellen were also found reading. Coby went to the grooms living quarters to sleep.
