Great Britain

 Great Britain
Selection Policy

The over riding aim is to choose the team and provide the preparation that will achieve the best possible results for Great Britain at the 2000 Olympic Games.  In addition talented combinations will be identified and wherever possible given opportunities to progress particularly through competing internationally.

The specific aims are:

i) to make further improvements to our results at the Olympic Games from those achieved at the European Championships and to be in the Medal Zone.
ii) to select squads to achieve the best possible results for Great Britain at the Olympic Games 2000,  the European Championships in 2001 and the World Games in 2002; and
iii) to build a team to achieve a medal position at the European Championships 2003 and the Olympic Games in 2004.

Squads

Two squads will be selected according to performance results but one isolated high percentage will not lead to automatic inclusion.  Squad members are expected to show improvements in their training and competition results and if these are not achieved may no longer be included in a squad.  The squads are kept under constant surveillance and will be revised as and when circumstances dictate.

The Olympic Squad is for combinations capable of earning 66% in a Grand Prix test with FEI International Judges or with Grand Prix scores that the Selectors believe good enough to do so in the near future.

The Olympic Potential Squad for combinations with the potential to represent Britain in the future.  For Potential Olympic (Grand Prix) the target is 62% at Premier League or International shows in a Grand Prix test or with scores that the selectors believe good enough to do so in the near future supported by results of 67% or more in small tour. For Potential Olympic (Small tour and Basic) the targets are 66%, placings in the first three in Championships classes or Premier Leagues and clearly identifiable potential.  The horses should be 10 years and under and/or the riders 28 years and under.

Squad riders are the ones on whom any training will be focused.  Riders in the International Group and others will be given opportunities to compete internationally.

Premier League Shows

These shows promote Dressage in Britain.  The International Teams Committee wish riders to give them maximum support and believe that top riders are under a moral obligation to play their part in this vital sector of British Dressage.

Selectors and Scouts will be at Premier League Shows which will be used as a part of the selection process.  Results at these shows will be particularly important for those combinations who have few or no International results.

Any combination that has qualified for the Olympics must attend at least one Premier League Show and only under exceptional circumstances (expressed in writing and agreed to by the Selectors) will this obligation be waived.

All Squad riders should attend at least one Premier League Show and only under exceptional circumstances (expressed in writing and agreed to by the Selectors) will this obligation be waived.

International Shows

Most weight will be given to results at International shows with FEI  `International’ judges.  The International Teams Committee reserves the right to nominate specific shows for compulsory attendance if required.

Announcement of Team

A long list will be drawn up mid March.  All longlisted riders will be expected to compete at a special trial on April 26 at Daylesford and only under exceptional circumstances (expressed in writing, and agreed to by the Selectors) will this obligation be waived.

A short list will be drawn up at the end of June.

It is planned to announce the team and reserves for the Olympics at the end of Hickstead International where short listed combinations should compete.

Quarantine

The team and reserves are expected to  go into quarantine from August 7th until the horses fly to Australia August 23-25.

Veterinary

As part of the selection process the advice of an FEI accredited veterinary surgeon will be taken into consideration.  There will be an official inspection which all horses must attend and where a blood test may be taken. If a horse is based abroad then an inspection will be arranged by the International Teams Committee at the rider’s expense.

Modifications

The right is reserved that in exceptional circumstances the selection policy can be waived or modified in order to enhance the likelihood of achieving the stated goals.
