Australia Eventing Out as Olympic Sport? Source: The Equestrian Federation of Australia 8/30/02. An IOC (International Olympic Committee) reviewing the Olympic programsa and making recommendations for the Beijing 2009 Olympic Games includes a proposal to remove Eventing from Equestrian Events. Costs and "challenges in reaching high global participation and the danger for athletes and horses" are cited. As Eventing is Australia's gold medal equestrian discipline with Australia winning its third successive Team Gold at Sydney, losing eventing would have far reaching implications for the sport in Australia. The FEI (Federation Equestrian Internationale), the governing body of international equestrian sports has already made significant changes to the format of Olympic competition in eventing. Alternatives to removal of eventing will be discussed with the IOC.
