A greater degree of difficulty probably would have raised the score,
but also would have gone over the line! This horse can passage! And do
tempis! Big beautiful tempis. But the tense back shows up in the
backward steps at the halt, and the rider often finds herself needing to
sit waaay behind the motion to counter balance the back (I didn’t say
this was a great idea—just that she does it). Wowser piaffe and woswer
passage, but tight in the neck and the tension shows in the walk, too.

In 2001, Gonnelien Rothenberger-Gordijn
won the National (Dutch) Dressage Championships with Weyden (1986,
Hanoverian chestnut stallion by Western Star X Grande). She
grew up in the Netherlands, but married German Sven Rothenberger,
her trainer and international competitor who won the Individual
Bronze at Atlanta on Weyden, and they now live in Germany. After
the European Young Rider Championships in 1989, she moved to
Conrad Schumacher's stables to refine her riding skills. While
there, she met her husband, Sven. They have three children
and live in an old country estate near Frankfurt. Their
dressage horses are stabled at home and the couple tries to train
as much as possible together. Sven isn't competing any more
because of severe back problems. However, Gonnelien and
Sven's Atlanta Bronze medal winner, Weyden, form a very nice
pair. |
